It happens a lot to me so I totally relate. Especially with the diverse cultures present at my school, I’m bound to make mistakes. I’m fine with all the Latin names but I am hopeless at all the French/ West African names.
I handle it by being honest with the kids. I remind them how many people I teach; that I will have the names by November but they need to be patient with me.
Then I write my full name on the board. I have two last names, one that’s easy and ones that’s Greek and very hard to spell and pronounce. I ask for volunteers to say it. No one ever can. Laughter ensues because it sounds hilarious when it’s said wrong. If I mess up students names, I apologize but ask them to remember how they all struggled with my tongue-twister name.
Particularly difficult names get spelled phonetically and added into my handwritten roll book
